The prior art discloses various designs of head restraints for use in vehicles. The following U.S. Pat. Nos. reflect the state of the art of which applicant is aware: U.S. Pat. Nos. 2,957,722, 2,989,422, 3,660,280, 3,874,658, 4,010,832 and 4,130,441.
There are a number of different problems that must be addressed in designing a vehicle head restraint. For example, unlike a conventional seat head restraint that extends from the seating surface to a point above the head of the user, a vehicle head restraint should be free of any attachment to the vehicle floor. In the design of such a head restraint, it is important to maintain a constant distance between the seating surface and the head of the vehicle passenger. This is complicated by the fact that the vehicle passenger’s head position can be modified by various factors such as vehicle speed, inertial forces, acceleration and deceleration, and seat position. Such factors obviously vary over the course of a trip. The prior art has approached the problem of vehicle head restraint design by providing a head restraint that springs back from the head of the vehicle passenger. The disadvantage of this design is that the restraint may spring back to a position below the head of the vehicle passenger, thus causing injury or discomfort to the passenger.
Another problem with head restraint designs in the past has been the provision of adequate force resisting mechanisms to limit the movement of the head restraint in a vertical direction when the passenger’s head is shifted in the vertical direction.
