“Gervill is a free Java based sound synthesizer. It is a re-implementation of the Wavosaur music synthesizer, which is the open source Java implementation of the Yamaha GS wave table synthesis engine. It supports the old, high performance Wavosaur code as well as several modern Wavosaur or other musical tables and “sounds”. The Gervill WAVOSAUR tables are written in 2d-wavetable format, which is the standard on the GS hardware. There are WAVOSAUR tables for the synth engine below the program name (High-Level, Normal, etc.) or you can create your own. Both Midi and Audio streams can be used to generate sounds. You can use the default MIDI stream, or you can choose to use an arbitrary midi file (Midi format is supported). You can choose how many audio input/output channels to use (1/2/4/6). The most basic Gervill songs use all 6 channels, so you can use different instruments for each speaker/head. You can choose the sample rate and buffer size of the audio output buffers. You can specify the amount of audio output you want to allow. (Normal mode: 0, Bass: -1, Low: -1, High: 0, and All: -1) You can easily control the synth’s various parameters (time, pitch, gain, filter, envelope attack and decay, etc.) using sliders. What does that mean exactly? It’s just a list of hardware requirements to do something, not an assessment of how well it works on that list. It’s more like a set of guidelines than a checklist. Don’t know what a “Broadwell-E” CPU is? That’s OK! All hardware is listed in a form that doesn’t require any prior knowledge of what they are and you can just look at a table.
