The most difficult part of applying basic edits to photographs is getting that first image looking good. Photographers should start here to get their photos on the right track. For professional shots, you can start on the next page.

Mastering Your First Image

The first step in becoming a Photoshop guru is to become comfortable with basic retouching. You need to be able to quickly and easily create the look you’re going for without spending too much time on an edit. You can’t change something and expect that it’ll look better when you open the image.

The first image in this section is of a girl in a swimming suit on a beige wall. Her eyes had to be changed, the white of the suit needs to be removed, and the red eye was created.

You can skip the next three steps because they’re all about creating images, not making them look more pretty.

Starting with the background

For this particular shot, the background is not as important as how the subject looks. I recommend using the Background Eraser tool, shown in Figure 3-1, to remove the background, and then use the Clone Stamp tool to create a soft edge on her eyes. (You can’t create the clone-stamp effect if you choose Soft Light or Hard Light.) If you want to create a hard edge, use the Magic Wand, shown in Figure 3-2, to select her face. You can use the Airbrush tool to create the red eye and even change the color.

**Figure 3-1:** The Background Eraser tool allows you to quickly remove unwanted backgrounds from an image.

**Figure 3-2:** The Magic Wand tool is a useful means of selecting, isolating, and altering an object in an image.

Creating the girl’s eyes

The girl’s eyes are dark brown and a little cloudy. To lighten her eyes, use the original eyes as a guide.

After you select the eyes, use the Magic Wand tool to select the areas of skin that you want to lighten (Figure 3-3).

**Figure 3-3:** With the Magic Wand tool, you can select a color area that you want to lighten or darken.

Keep the brush size small when lightening an eye, or the changes will be too extreme. I placed a little dot of a light blue color on the eye near the center of the pupil. You may have to experiment with colors

This article introduces Photoshop elements and tips on how to use it.

Step 1: Install Photoshop Elements

We will learn how to use Photoshop Elements, so for now, we need to install Adobe Photoshop Elements. You can get it free on the software website or on Google Play, which is a version that allows you to get the app without paying.

My PSD File

Step 2: Create a New Project and Import My PSD File

Once you install Photoshop elements, go to the program menu and select File -> New -> Create a New Project. It creates a new folder in the program folder, which is the Photoshop elements folder, for you to be able to save your project.

Step 3: Choose My PSD File as the Upload Location

When your file is uploaded to the program, it opens automatically. Go to the folder where you uploaded your file and go to File -> Open. Select your PSD file, as seen in the picture above.

Step 4: Open the Photoshop Elements Editor

Once your file is open, the editor displays the file you uploaded. There are many options to customize, design and edit your images.

There are two panels on top of the editor: a Project panel and a Layers panel. The Project panel allows you to adjust the settings for your project and to create new projects. The Layers panel allows you to organize your images and edit and combine them.

The Create and Manage panel will allow you to do these functions:

The View panel gives you the tools to work on the image. The Window tool allows you to close a window. The Eye Dropper tool allows you to select the pixels of the image.

Step 5: Work on Your Image

When you open your image, your first task is to organize your project. You can resize your image to your liking. The important aspect is to maintain the aspect ratio. Drag the image to the center of the canvas to do so.

At the top of the screen, there are many options. Go to Edit -> Preferences. You can change the units for your measurements, select your canvas size (the side length of the canvas), adjust the zoom and save your settings.

We will now work on the actual project.

To Edit an image: go to Edit -> Transform. At the top, you have the option to select a free transform or to perform a simple transform.

To crop your image:

Checking if a serial port exists from a Winform application on a Windows 2012 R2 64-bit machine?

I have a.NET application which is supposed to check if a certain type of serial port exists, if it does it has to open the port.
On a Windows Vista 32-bit machine, this worked fine, but on my Windows 2012 R2 64-bit machine, it throws a System.InvalidCastException because the check does not account for the fact that serial ports are now treated as a different type:

System.InvalidCastException was unhandled by user code
Message=”The conversion is not valid”
at System.ServiceProcess.CommunicationUtility.OpenPipe(SafePipeHandle pipe, bool endpointReceivedResponse)
at System.ServiceProcess.ICommunicationObject.OpenPipe()
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.OpenPipe(SafePipeHandle pipe)
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.StartPipeScopedService(SafePipeHandle pipe, ServiceController service)
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.Start(String[] args)
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.Main()

Therefore the question:
How can I do the check to see if the serial port exists so that it works both on Windows Vista and Windows 2012 R2?
I tried to run the code with the ‘System.ServiceProcess’ namespace commented out, and it worked fine.
So is it an issue with System.ServiceProcess?
For example this code works fine on Windows 2012 R2:
using System;
using System.ServiceProcess;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;
using System.ServiceProcess.Activation;

namespace CommCheck
class Program
[DllImport(“kernel32.dll”, SetLastError = true)]
public static extern SafePipeHandle CreatePipe(IntPtr SourcePipeHandle,

Apache 2.4.6 Fails to start up

I’m running an AWS cloud server with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Apache 2.4.6. Apache is not starting up, though it is running on port 80.
I’m new to Apache, so I haven’t been able to debug this myself.
After I removed every virtual host and tried to start it up, I ran into this error:
