CopyrightÂ .Aircraft seats and other movable structures usually have at least one seat cushion adapted to support a user during movement of the seat. The support usually is provided by the seat cushion with the user being supported by a supporting structure, such as a back rest, a foot rest, head rest, etc.
The user of the seat usually is seated within an aircraft cockpit and therefore the aircraft seat usually is located in close proximity to other structural components of the aircraft cockpit, such as arm rests, instrument panels, and so forth. The close proximity of other structural components of the aircraft cockpit to the seat makes it difficult to maintain the seat cushion at a desired height.
One solution has been to permanently install a seat cushion height adjustment mechanism, such as the automobile seat adjustment assembly illustrated in U.S. Pat. No. 3,926,576. These type of adjustment mechanisms are effective, but because the mechanisms are permanently installed in an existing seat, the mechanisms cannot be easily moved from one seat to the other.
Another approach that has been utilized to adjust the height of a movable seat cushion has been to use a motor to drive a linkage mechanism that raises or lowers the seat cushion. While effective to a certain extent, these types of seat height adjustment mechanisms still do not eliminate interference with other components of the aircraft cockpit. Also, these types of mechanisms are costly, and require excessive amounts of power to operate.
